Many events be they parties, conferences or meetings don’t happen in restaurants or venues purpose built for eating but by using a caterer you can have great food served anywhere. As an event planner or simply someone organising a private party or celebration using a caterer gives you much more flexibility over where you can hold an event as many venues either don’t provide catering or don’t provide the catering that you really want. Some venues of course don’t even have full kitchens but many caterers use mobile catering units or can do a lot of preparation beforehand and use a small kitchen even to feed hundreds of guests in some cases.
Of course not all caterers are the same, some specialise in parties and celebrations like weddings, some only doing weddings. Other caterers do mainly small events or others only do events with hundreds of guests. There are also caterers who specialise in outdoor catering for events which could be a full sit down meal but outdoors but may also include specialist offerings such as barbeques or hog-roasts.

You may want to consider the type of food you want and choose a caterer accordingly if you either have special dishes or styles of food in mind as if you choose a caterer they may either be limited on what they can offer or it may be that they will have a go at something that really needs to be done by someone with experience. Take regional cuisine from around the world, it is popular at family events where the family has heritage from an area and want to celebrate over regional dishes: you may be able to find a specialist caterer who specialises in a type of food and has experience. If your guests are going to be served specialist dishes it is a good idea to do them well and ensure they are genuine, even more important if you are trying to impress clients or suppliers at a business event.

The types of events that can benefit from caterers is huge and it isn’t just big parties or conferences it can be small meals, meals or buffets for a dozen or so people , or even less, as well or even just hor d’ oeuvres.

Businesses often use caterers for events including even meetings both internal and external. It is of course important for businesses to impress clients but also there is the fact that most businesses don’t have anyone to cook and if events are within their offices may have nowhere to cook. Food to have over meetings can easily be bought along by a local caterer ready to eat. At business events like conferences a sit down meal or buffet may be a major part of the conference and a chance for people to get to know each other better and socialise, specialist caterers may be the only ones capable of dealing with the kind of numbers some conferences may have, which could go into thousands in some cases.

Private parties and celebrations include things like weddings and birthdays may be just as important or more important than any business event, for those involved they will want a memorable party which goes smoothly and if you are the organiser you probably wont want to be the one cooking or you will miss the whole event yourself. Caterers can come in and cook fabulous food either for meals or buffets that are for some types of party more suitable.
